Bridada Catoe

Bio

Bridada Catoe is a conceptual artist and film photographer based in South Carolina. Born in Cheraw, South Carolina, Catoe was first introduced to film photography as a visual arts student at Clemson University, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts; and where she picked up her first film camera. After graduating, she spent nearly a decade in the corporate world while attending Academy of Art University, earning her Master of Fine Arts in Fashion. Eventually, Catoe made the decision to step away from the corporate and education world and return to art full time.

Returning to the camera felt less like a new direction and more like finding her way back to herself. Film photography had always been her first love and picking it up again opened something; a way of seeing, and a way of sharing how her mind works and what her eyes notice. Her work investigates the internal architecture of identity: how lived experience, behavioral inheritance, and environment shapes the self from the inside out. Working with 35mm film, Catoe constructs meticulous still life compositions in which everyday objects become carriers of psychological weight. House Rules, her current body of work, examines what it means to grow up in an environment where love, correction, and harm are made indistinguishable from one another.

Artist Statement

I am a conceptual artist and film photographer working at the intersection of individual identity and the lived experience that shapes it. My work examines the subtle architecture of an inner world: how the health of an internal ecosystem is contingent upon what it is fed. I am drawn to deconstructing the foundations of that ecosystem, while assessing the threat of consumption that waits to weaken its structure from within.

As I move through the world, I am deliberate about presence. I collect what my senses take in as data: information about the relationship between internal and external, between what is felt and what is performed. I reflect these observations through meticulously composed images, where the objects I choose become carriers of contradiction; familiar, domestic, and weighted with more than they appear to hold.

House Rules, my current body of work, investigates behavioral inheritance and the interior architecture that forms when a child's understanding of love, correction, and harm are made indistinguishable from one another. The series asks what it means to excavate identity when the foundation itself was built on unexamined ground.
